SUSTAINABILITY
our journey
Our journey began with a research, travelling to rural communities across Africa and globally, where we sought to understand the unique challenges faced by artisans. Despite the high demand for handcrafted products, both utilitarian and culturally significant, many artisans remain trapped in poverty due to exploitative middlemen. It is a paradox that while these handmade goods hold immense value in both local and international markets, the artisans who create them often see only a fraction of the retail price.

Our mission is rooted in the understanding that traditional craft plays an essential role not only in Africa's identity but also in its economic potential.

impact
While we continue working towards improving the inclusion of Artisan Communities in global supply chains, at 54faces we believe there is still a need for more initiatives that give artisans a stake in the broader wealth creation process. We are inspired to create a impactful platform that translates sustainability to social innovation, ensuring the artisans can directly benefit from the entire value chain.
By building a comprehensive craft ecosystem, we aim to create not only social impact but also a sustainable, growth-oriented framework that enables artisans to thrive. We believe that by recognising the full value of traditional African crafts, we can unlock new economic opportunities for communities across the continent, while also fostering cultural preservation and growth.

ON ARTISAN COMMUNITIES IN AFRICA
Traditional craft is a key employment sector in many parts of Africa, particularly in rural areas. It offers livelihoods to millions of artisans and families and plays a vital role in preserving cultural heritage
The average income for an artisan in Africa is generally modest, with many artisans earning between $50 and $100 USD per month,
The preservation of traditional crafts in Africa can boost employment, reduce poverty, support local communities, and drive economic growth by tapping into cultural heritage, tourism, and global markets.
