problem statement
Urbanisation and the Decline of Rural Craft Communities
As urbanisation accelerates, rural communities long the custodians of traditional weaving techniques are shrinking. In Salinas, Ecuador, this shift threatens the transmission of ancestral knowledge as younger generations seek opportunities elsewhere, often overlooking the rich artistic heritage that defines their identity. Rural-to-urban migration is leading to the decline of artisanal pottery practices, as younger generations disengage from traditional crafts due to economic and social pressures.
the solution
Cross-cultural collaborations provide a dynamic way to revitalise these communities. By connecting young artisans in Salinas with international designers, students, and cultural practitioners, we create a space where knowledge is exchanged, traditions are reimagined, and new economic opportunities arise. This not only preserves cultural heritage but also modernises it in ways that appeal to contemporary markets. Engaging young people in these collaborations ensures that traditional pottery remains relevant and sustainable. By incorporating workshops, apprenticeships, and creative exchange programmes, we encourage the next generation to view craftsmanship as a viable career path. Additionally, promoting rural tourism where visitors can immerse themselves in the pottery-making process generates economic benefits while reinforcing the value of these traditions.
call to action
Investing in young artisans is key to preserving the cultural legacy of Salinas. Supporting initiatives that empower youth through skill development, mentorship, and global partnerships ensures that traditional pottery does not fade away but evolves into a thriving, sustainable practice for future generations. Let’s work together to create a future where heritage and innovation coexist.
