RETIRED ARTISANS
problem statement
The Impact of Industrialisation and Mass Production
One of the greatest challenges in preserving traditional crafts in Portugal is the dominance of industrialisation and mass production. With an abundance of manufacturing factories, handmade goods can now be replicated rapidly and at a fraction of the cost. This shift has significantly reduced demand for handcrafted items, leaving many retired artisans in Porto without a market for their lifelong skills. Traditional crafts struggle to compete with the efficiency and lower costs of mass-produced goods, leading to a decline in artisanal workshops and the risk of losing centuries-old techniques.
the solution
Solution: Work is already underway to create sustainable opportunities for retired artisans while ensuring their skills continue to be valued. This project is actively addressing the issue through several initiatives:
-
Workshops and Mentorship Programmes: Retired artisans are now sharing their expertise with younger generations through structured learning initiatives. These programmes have been integrated into schools, universities, and creative hubs, ensuring that traditional crafts remain relevant and accessible.
-
Limited-Edition Collaborations: Artisans are currently working with contemporary designers, local businesses, and international brands to create exclusive collections that showcase the uniqueness of handmade work. These collaborations are bringing new life to traditional crafts and expanding their reach to modern markets.
call to action
Traditional crafts are an integral part of Portugal’s cultural identity, and thanks to these initiatives, their future is being safeguarded. However, there is still more to be done. By continuing to support artisan-led workshops, investing in collaborations, and choosing handmade over mass-produced goods, we can ensure that these traditions not only survive but thrive for generations to come.
