IMPACT FOR TRAVEL

problem statement

Recognising Botswana’s Weaving Heritage

Botswana’s artisans, particularly the skilled weavers of Maun, have long created exquisite pieces that reflect the country’s deep cultural heritage. However, their craft often lacks the recognition it deserves, overshadowed by modern industries and mass production. Despite the exceptional artistry and technical skill involved in basket weaving, many artisans struggle to gain visibility in larger markets.

54faces is collaborating with weavers in Maun, transforming this craft into timeless homeware that reaches global audiences. By using locally sourced materials, these artisans will create homeware products that honour Botswana’s weaving traditions while offering sustainable livelihoods. Each piece carries the legacy of generations, celebrating the artistry and precision passed down through time.

The challenge is the marginalisation of artisans and their work due to a lack of cultural recognition and market access.

the solution

This partnership is actively addressing these challenges through initiatives that bring Maun’s weaving heritage into contemporary homes worldwide:

  • Preserving Ancestral Techniques: Skilled weavers receive opportunities to refine and pass down their craft, ensuring that Botswana’s weaving traditions continue to thrive.

  • Creating Sustainable Economic Pathways: Artisans are connected to fair-paying markets, allowing them to earn a living while keeping their skills alive.

  • Showcasing Craftsmanship on Global Platforms: Through exhibitions, collaborations, and digital platforms, the work of Maun’s artisans reaches new audiences who appreciate the value of handmade pieces.

  • Cultural Education and Awareness: By highlighting the significance of Botswana’s weaving heritage, this initiative ensures that future generations understand and celebrate their cultural identity.

call to action

Recognition is long overdue. Supporting these artisans is not just about purchasing a basket, it is about valuing history, skill, and cultural identity. By choosing to invest in handcrafted pieces from Maun, we ensure that this extraordinary heritage continues to shape the future.
